An Open Letter To James Patterson (from ANTIBOOKCLUB)
"I don’t think we have a real strong spokesperson in the publishing community, someone who can stand up... I’m stepping up a little. But it’d be nice if it was the head of a publishing company." - James Patterson, in an interview w/ Salon
JAMES PATTERSON WANTS YOU TO KNOW HE IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE STATE OF BOOKS IN THE STATES OF AMERICA
Or, An Open Letter to James Patterson
The cover of Publishers Weekly April 22nd, 2013 issue begs "Who will save our books? Our bookstores? Our libraries?" A life preserver is floating in a pool of blood, in the center ring is a quote from James Patterson, a quote which quotes the headline above it, or maybe the headline is quoting the quote. His words are elucidated in what appears to be that of the comic sans variety.
James Patterson bought the front cover, the inside front cover, the inside back cover, and the back cover. He wants to know why books aren't being bailed out by our government. He's asking, "WTF America, we saved banks and the auto industry, so why are we ignoring books? Huh? So why? WHO IZ GONNA SAVE BOOKS, AMURRICA? YOU?" He's real passionate about it. He quoted himself in the ads he bought BECAUSE JAMES PATTERSON WANTS YOU TO KNOW HE IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE STATE OF BOOKS IN THE STATES OF AMERICA, K?! He paid for the full page back cover of Sunday's New York Times Book Review, too.
That's some serious money. I can't help but think how many books James Patterson could have purchased with that money; how many community bookstores he could have supported, how many publishers and authors would have, as a result, felt the love. It could have been a tremendously symbiotic - and symbolic - moment. "Here's my credit card. Have your staff pick out their favorite books and then give them away to your community. Let's get people excited about books." How what we need most of all are book sales, all of us need more book sales...
The advertising industry certainly reaped the benefits of your concern. You just spent tens of thousands of dollars to place high visibility ads with your name highly visible. It doesn't matter what the rhetoric is, or how utterly absurd the notion, BECAUSE WHAT MATTERS IS THAT JAMES PATTERSON IS KEEPING IT REAL FOR YOU, DEAR READERS.
Keep fighting your good fight, James Patterson. And best of luck with your next book, which is, coincidentally, being released nationwide one week to the day that you placed these ads. Its titled 12th of Never, which is precisely the next time you'll see me writing your name again.
